Viking South America Cruise Travel Agent Expert

Booking a South America cruise offers a unique opportunity to explore an incredibly diverse continent, rich in culture, history, wildlife, and natural beauty. Here are several compelling reasons to consider a South America cruise:

1. Incredible Natural Wonders

Amazon River and Rainforest: Many South America cruises travel deep into the Amazon, offering a chance to explore one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. You can witness exotic wildlife, lush forests, and remote indigenous communities.

Patagonia and the Chilean Fjords: Cruises to the southern tip of the continent reveal the dramatic landscapes of Patagonia, with towering glaciers, rugged mountains, and untouched fjords that are breathtakingly beautiful.

Iguazu Falls: Some cruises include excursions to iconic sites like Iguazu Falls, one of the largest and most spectacular waterfall systems in the world, located on the border of Brazil and Argentina.

2. Rich Cultural and Historical Experiences

Ancient Civilizations: Explore the legacy of the Inca Empire by visiting destinations like Machu Picchu (via a pre- or post-cruise excursion) or experience the remnants of ancient civilizations throughout the continent.

Colonial Architecture: Many South American cities like Cartagena, Lima, and Buenos Aires feature well-preserved colonial architecture, reflecting centuries of Spanish and Portuguese influence.

Vibrant Local Cultures: South America is home to diverse cultures, including indigenous communities, Afro-Brazilian traditions, and European influences. Cruises offer the opportunity to experience local traditions, music, festivals, and cuisine.

3. Unique Wildlife Encounters

Galápagos Islands: A cruise to the Galápagos Islands offers one of the world’s most famous wildlife experiences. You’ll encounter animals like giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and sea lions, many of which can’t be found anywhere else on Earth.

Penguins and Sea Life: Cruises to the southern parts of South America, particularly around the Falkland Islands and Antarctica, offer opportunities to see penguins, seals, and whales in their natural habitats.

Amazon Wildlife: In the Amazon, you can spot pink river dolphins, jaguars, macaws, monkeys, and a range of other exotic species as you cruise through this vast tropical rainforest.

4. Diverse Destinations and Experiences

Brazil’s Beaches and Rainforests: Cruise along Brazil’s coastline to visit vibrant cities like Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, as well as the beautiful beaches and rainforests of the region. Rio’s iconic landmarks, such as Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer, are highlights for many travelers.

Buenos Aires and Tango Culture: Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is famous for its European-style boulevards, tango music, and sophisticated cultural scene. Cruises that stop here often include tango performances and tours of the city's historic neighborhoods.

Andes Mountains and Coastal Deserts: The western coast of South America offers dramatic contrasts, from the high peaks of the Andes in countries like Chile and Peru to the arid Atacama Desert, the driest non-polar desert in the world.

5. Exploration of Remote Regions

Cape Horn and the End of the World: Cruises to the southern tip of South America often sail around Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. It’s a chance to experience some of the most remote and wild regions of the world.

Antarctica Extension: Some South America cruises offer itineraries that include expeditions to Antarctica, allowing you to explore the frozen continent's pristine wilderness, glaciers, and unique wildlife, such as emperor penguins and orcas.

6. Adventure and Outdoor Activities

Hiking and Trekking: South America is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Cruises often offer shore excursions for hiking, including trekking through the Andes or exploring the lush landscapes of Patagonia.

Kayaking and Snorkeling: In regions like the Galápagos and along the coasts of Brazil, you can enjoy water-based activities such as snorkeling, diving, and kayaking, providing a close-up view of marine life and coastal ecosystems.

Exploration of Natural Parks: South America has numerous national parks and nature reserves, such as Torres del Paine in Chile and Manu National Park in Peru, that are accessible by cruise excursions.

7. Culinary Experiences

Diverse and Flavorful Cuisine: South American cuisine is a delicious blend of indigenous, European, and African influences. Cruises allow you to sample local dishes like Argentine steak, Peruvian ceviche, Brazilian feijoada, and fresh seafood in coastal regions.

Wine Regions: Some South American cruises include stops in renowned wine-producing areas like Chile’s Casablanca and Argentina’s Mendoza, where you can tour vineyards and taste world-class wines like Malbec and Carmenère.

Another fabulous trip!
Rey has booked several domestic and international trips for me over the years. Each time the experience was fantastic. Rey is not only a knowledgeable and experienced travel agent, he is patient with groups and always provides stellar customer service. The resorts are always fabulous and his recommendations on what to do when we arrive at our destinations make my vacations more enjoyable. I’ve counted on Rey to book fabulous vacations for over 10 years and he always delivers the best. I’ve always enjoyed the individual attention and care Rey provides his clients. He understands the apprehension that comes along with trying new places and is thorough and accommodating as a result. He’s also great at making suggestions on future vacations and I’ve never been disappointed when I follow his suggestions. Rey will remain my travel confidante for many years to come. He’s the best, hands down!

We have worked with Rey for many years and have always enjoyed the experience. Most of our travel has been river cruises in Europe but last year we did a trip to South Africa. Rey is very thoughtful, thorough and responsive.
