Mangroves are a variety of shrub and tree species that live along seashores, rivers, and estuaries. They are remarkably resilient and adaptive, this means they can survive in muddy shores with a mixture of both salt and freshwater and have evolved to be some of the toughest forests in the tropics. Damas Island is a small (6 sq km) paradise, located in the vicinity of Manuel Antonio at just 20 minutes away from your selected hotel. This 2 hours safari tour will take you in a comfortable small and covered river motorboat that silently navigate through the canals into one of the most mysterious environment in Costa Rica: the coastal mangrove wetlands, known for its natural beauty and wildlife that lives in the different types of mangrove trees. From the boat, a professional naturalist guide will explain you the biology and interactions of the mangrove ecosystem and will try to find and point out the incredible flora and fauna that flows harmoniously. Mangroves are home of some of the most exotic species in the tropics, including reptiles like caimans, crocodiles, iguanas and snakes. Mammals like sloths, raccoons, and primates like white-faced monkeys. Crabs also play an important part in the environment. These scavengers help recycle nitrogen, which is super important for the survival of the ecosystem. Mollusks of all sorts thrive in the protection of the mangroves as well as several species of small fish and aquatic birds like kingfishers, ospreys, herons, and egrets. The stability of the boat will allow you to keep your camera steady for some unforgettable wildlife photos.
